Our office agrees with the recommendation from the American Dental Association (ADA) that children should establish a “dental home” by the age of one. Early age appointments will be completed while your child sits on your lap so they feel safe and secure.
During their first visit, we want to make sure your child’s teeth and gums are developing properly, but perhaps the biggest focus will be on just getting them to feel comfortable with the sights, sounds, and friendly faces they will find at the dentist’s office. It’s also your chance to ask any questions you may have, like…
We always block off plenty of time for this initial appointment, so you should feel completely free to ask any questions you have about your child’s oral health and development!
Once your child is old enough to be able to sit still, we can perform a very simple checkup of their teeth and gums in order to pinpoint any potential issues, as well as to confirm that their development is coming along smoothly. Our hygiene team will also explain to your child how to properly brush and floss their teeth once they are old enough.
Children are most vulnerable to cavities and infection between the ages of 6 and 14, while their tooth enamel is still developing and is not yet hard enough to defend itself against the acids and bacteria that can weaken it.
Dental sealants and topical fluoride treatments can help protect the teeth against acids and bacteria. Both are applied quickly and painlessly at the end of a routine checkup and cleaning. Dental sealants are painted onto the chewing surface of the premolars and molars, then dried under a special light. Fluoride is applied topically and then rinsed away.
If your child plays contact sports, you will also want to consider protecting their smile with a custom-fitted mouthguard. Not only does this small piece of plastic do a great job preventing broken, chipped, and otherwise damaged teeth, studies show it can also reduce the risk of concussion!
